    Study suggests fall in problem gambling
    The second half of a study carried out into FOBT machines has suggested that problem gambling as a whole had fallen. The report, carried out by MORI and Europe Economics and paid for by the Association of British Bookmakers, also found that problem gambling is not inextricably linked to any one form of gambling.

    Stakes and prizes issue raised in Commons
    The issue of if and when there will be an increase in stakes and prizes for AWP machines was raised during a recent question time in the House of Commons by Labour MP Janet Dean. Replying to her question, minister for sport Richard Caborn would only say he had had constructive discussions with relevant organisations and would make an announcement shortly.

    Consumer spending on online gambling predicted to increase
    A new report has forecast that UK consumer spending on online gambling will increase from £660m in 2005 to £1.6bn in 2010. Published by Research and Markets, it also predicted that the number of active UK clients will grow from 1.1m in 2005 to 2.1m in 2010.

    Namco opens acquisition programme with bowling purchase
    Namco Europe Limited, through its subsidiary Namco Operations Europe Limited, has increased its presence in the UK location and entertainment business sector with the purchase of the Number 10 bowling group for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition raises the number of locations operated by Namco Operations Europe Limited in the UK and Spain to 16, including the premium multi-leisure centres in County Hall, London and the Trafford Centre, Manchester.

    Blackpool's 'Casino Quarter' details unveiled
    Further details of a proposed £350m conference, casino and leisure development called the Casino Quarter have been revealed by Blackpool Borough Council. A luxury, landmark hotel, modeled on Dubai's famous Burj Al-Arab property would form the heart of the development, alongside the regional casino and an all-weather, mixed-use leisure and retail development.

    Alton Towers Muslim fun day cancelled
    Alton Towers, Britain's biggest theme park, has cancelled what was billed as the country's first 'National Muslim Fun Day' because of lack of interest. The event's organisers, Islamic Leisure, who rented the park for the day and were marketing the event, called it off due to "insufficient ticket sales".

    Partygaming buys Gamebookers
    With a significant proportion of its income coming from the US, online gaming group Partygaming has moved to diversify its business by buying betting company Gamebookers for 102m euros (£69m). The owners of gaming sites such as PartyPoker.com and EmpirePoker.com, Partygaming generates about three-quarters of its revenue from customers in the US. According to the firm, Gamebookers does not accept bets from the US.

    New-look launch for London Show websites
    The online presence of ATEI, ICE and ICEi (23-25 January 2007, Earls Court, London) has been refreshed with updated looks and new URLs. The show-specific websites, which went live at the beginning of August, are located at www.atei-exhibition.com, www.ice-exhibition.com and www.icei-exhibition.com respectively.

    Talarius sees like-for-like sales rise
    Talarius PLC has seen like-for-like sales at its Quicksilver chain of adult gaming centres rise by 15 per cent and by 90 per cent on its Cyberslotz website for the 28 weeks to July 15 - the first half of its financial year. In a trading update before the release of the firm's interim results on September 19, chief executive Nick Harding said strong like-for-like sales growth in both the group's businesses has continued and a pipeline of new AGC sites had been put in place.

    Quebec smoking ban not so bad for bingo business
    Since the introduction of a ban on smoking in the Canadian province of Quebec on May 31, directors at two of its bingo halls have reported they are off to a fresh start with an influx of new clientele. While both admitted that there has been a downturn in trade, they reported that the cleaner air had brought a new, younger clientele, and predicted that business would soon recover.

    Video games put children off amusement arcades
    72 per cent of youngsters questioned for a survey by children's TV channel Toonami have said that having video games consoles at home had deterred them from visiting an amusement arcade. The new research found that children prefer to participate in more active pursuits whilst spending time at the beach, with building sandcastles, surfing or snorkeling and rock pooling amongst the favourite activities.

    Machete gang raid bingo hall
    A Gala bingo hall in Basildon has been raided by a gang of balaclava-clad men wielding machetes and large knives. The men ordered customers and staff to drop to the floor and took one worker hostage, using him as a bargaining tool to access the room where the club's takings were kept.

    BetonSports executives could face arrest warrants
    Executives or high ranking employees of BetonSports have been warned by US Attorney Catherine Hanaway that they could be issued with arrest warrants for contempt of court if they come onto American soil. Her threat came after lawyers for BetonSports failed to show at a court hearing in St. Louis on Monday following indictments against the company two weeks ago.

    Prescott facing anti-corruption claim
    A claim that John Prescott may have broken anti-corruption laws by staying with American billionaire and Millennium Dome owner Phillip Anshutz are being investigated by the police. Following up on a complaint by Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker, Scotland Yard said that its inquiries are still at an early stage and a spokeswoman for the deputy prime minister said that he had not been contacted by detectives thus far.

    US online gambling crackdown claims latest casualty
    Continent 8 Technologies, a company that provides internet infrastructure to online gaming sites, has seemingly become the latest casualty of the US crackdown on remote gambling after it pulled the plug on its planned flotation on the London Stock Exchange's AIM market.     World Cup boosts William Hill profits
    William Hill has unveiled record takings from the World Cup, with the firm winning £17.5m from punters who placed bets on this summer's football tournament in Germany. This boosted Hill's first half profits by 30 per cent to £160m, and kick-started its second half performance, as gross win rose 13 per cent in the four weeks to July 25.

    Change to give Cleveleys new bingo hall
    An empty building intended for a health club on Cleveleys Promenade is set to become a bingo hall instead, after its owners failed to find an operator for the original venture. Manchester-based Property Alliance Group has applied to Wyre Council to change the use of the building, which will decide whether to grant permission this week.

    Preview pre-registrations up 35 per cent
    The organisers of the Preview 2007 coin-op expo, due to be held on October 11-12 at the London Novotel West, have reported that pre-registrations are up 35 per cent on last year. The show will play host to visitors from just under 20 nations, with guests expected from as far a field as Australia, Nigeria, Turkey and the Yemen.

    UFO scares arcade staff
    An unidentified intruder gave staff at a Liverpool adult gaming centre a big scare when it flew through the window into their office. The five-inch insect, that was later identified as an Emperor Dragonfly, gave workers at the Quicksilver arcade the slip for an hour before being caught in a pint glass.

    Sales of Olympic Lottery tickets increase
    Lottery ticket sales in support of the London Olympics have raised £13.4 million over the past three months to July, a 28 per cent increase on the £10.4 million raised in the previous quarter. Camelot revealed that lottery games in support of the Olympic venture had now raised nearly £30 million.

    CAP call on Blackpool residents for casino examination

    Gamebookers sign three-year shirt deal
    Online gaming site Gamebookers is set to become the first sports betting company to sponsor a French Premier League side after agreeing a three-year deal with FC Nantes. The Gamebookers.com logo will adorn the team's shirts as well as feature around the stadium for the duration of the contract. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

    Macau casino revenue to hit $8b this year
    Macau's casino gaming revenue looks set to rise by 18 per cent to US $8 billion by the end of 2006 according to Las Vegas-based Globalysis Ltd. The tourism research firm stated that the gross gaming revenue would rise on the back of 'strong macroeconomic activity, a robust tourism industry, increasing disposable income in countries such as China, and expected increases in direct low cost carrier services to Macau.'

    American majority say no to gambling ban
    Ninety-one per cent of Americans do not want a ban on internet gambling according to a poll conducted by financial news channel CNBC. The Wall Street Journal recently conducted a similar survey that concluded that 85 per cent of respondents do not favour a ban.

    AGA launch responsible gambling week
    The American Gambling Association has today (7th) launched the Ninth Annual Responsible Gambling Education Week. The trade organisation has funded a U.S. national advertising campaign for the event, as well as TV and radio public service announcements promoting responsible gambling.

    Flyde Leisure has officially opened its Golden Pyramids amusement complex in Blackpool, on the old site of Grab City in the golden mile. Flyde, in partnership with Crown Leisure, has invested £700,000 into machinery for the site and are planning to have rides installed in the roof of the building pending planning permission.

    Survey rates Camelot as 'top class'
    According to the 2006 Retailers Satisfaction Survey, Camelot has been rated as a 'top class supplier'. The survey, conducted by independent agency Illuminas between April and June 2006 revealed that all respondents considered their relationship with the lottery company to be as good as it was 12 months ago.

    U.S. research identifies gambling area of brain
    Researchers from the California Institute of Technology have identified the part of the brain that is stimulated by making wagers, and say the findings could prove useful in treating patients with gambling addiction.     European online company faces German ban
    The German state of Saxony announced that it was 'taking measures' to ban Bwin, formerly BetandWin, in the country, and would move to prohibit operations in the area before withdrawing its license. The online gaming company said that if the withdrawal was confirmed, it would sue for up to euros500 million.

    Glasgow must upgrade transport for super-casino license
    The Casino Advisory Panel (CAP) has said that Scotland's transport links must be improved if Glasgow is to win the UK's first super-casino license.     Nearly 15 million people visit Britain
    The UK has experienced a six per cent rise in overseas visitors in the first six months of 2006, taking this years figure to 14.9 million people according to the Office of National Statistics.     eCOGRA's Compliance Committee has decided to lift the suspension of Jackpot Factory's 'Play it Safe' seal after finding 'no evidence to suggest that Jackpot Factory management had any deliberate intention to encourage vulnerable persons to participate in gambling activities at group casinos'. International upped investment group Riv Acquisitions Holdings' offer of $17 per share to $20 causing the postponement while management determines whether the new offer is credible.

    Galway bookmakers report record festival
    Bookmakers are reporting record takings at Ireland's Galway Race Festival this year with oncourse bookies taking euros 21 million during the seven days, an increase of nearly 16 per cent on last year. Paddy Power said turnover was 'through the roof', while Galway based Mullhollands Bookmakers reported an increase of takings of between 13 and 15 per cent.

    Licensee claims poker victory
    A UK licensee in Gloucestershire is claiming that his twice-weekly poker games, held in the pub, are not illegal as no money is changing hands on the premises. Stroud District Council recently investigated David Akhurst of the New Inn, Dursley after the Gambling Commission issued a warning in July that 'games must not be used as an inducement for people to visit a pub.'

    Gala Bingo has signed an estimated £2 million deal to become the official sponsor of X-Factor judge Sharon Osbourne's new TV show, Mrs Osbourne Presents.     ATEI creative director appointed
    Clarion ATE, organisers of London's ATEI, ICE and ICEi, has appointed Chris Boon as creative director working on the 2007 event.     Vegas casino group looking at UK market
    Harrah's Entertainment is rumoured to be looking at a proposal to buy the UK's Stanley Leisure and London Clubs International. According to sources cited in the UK's Sunday Times newspaper, chief executive Gary Loveman has compiled a detailed appraisal of both companies, which are in the final stages of a £634 million merger.

    Consortium given Tote sale deadline
    The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has warned the racing consortium wanting to buy the Tote that it must secure the funds by the end of the month or risk losing out to another buyer. The consortium, which comprises the Racecourse Holdings Trust, Arena Leisure and Northern Racing, said that it had been in ongoing talks with the Racecourse Owners Association over funding to support the proposed £400 million bid.

    Bwin threatens legal action after license revoked
    Bwin called the German state government of Saxony's withdrawal of its gambling license a 'political assault' and threatened to sue the German state for estimated losses of euros500 million. The betting company has also filed a legal complaint against the state for announcing the withdrawal to the media without informing the company first.

    Gaming standards authority releases complaints figures
    eCOGRA received 265 complaints to its offices in the first half of 2006, of which 83 were not eCOGRA-accredited and therefore outside its authority, and 35 were 'non-specific' rants and statements that could not be followed up. The other 147 were intensively investigated according to the body, and 31 per cent were resolved in favour of the player.

    Nevada's State Gaming Control Board reported that casino gaming revenue on the Las Vegas Strip fell by 7.1 per cent to $454.8 million in June compared with the same period last year.     'Racino' plans submitted
    Wolverhampton's Dunstall Park racecourse has submitted plans to the city council for a new £12 million casino development that would see the existing facilities trebled in size. If granted, the project, dubbed 'racino', would be the first casino site in the country to take bets on horseracing.

    Gaming companies moving in on football sponsorship
    Bookmaker Betfred has announced a three-year deal with Manchester United to become the club's official bookmaking and online gaming' partner. Liverpool based Sportech also reported that it had struck a six-figure marketing deal to become the official gaming partner of Everton FC while online gaming company 888.com has agreed to become the official sponsor of Primera Liga club Sevilla for the next two seasons.

    Racecourse owner withdraws from Tote bid
    Northern Racing has withdrawn its involvement with the racing consortium vying to purchase the UK government-owned Tote bookmakers. The racecourse owner gave no reason for the move.

    BIL close to Clermont purchase
    The investment company owned by Malaysian billionaire Quek Leng Chan, BIL International, is on the verge of purchasing the Clermont Club from Rank in a deal worth around £30 million according to The Times newspaper. The venue, located in Mayfair, London, would become the first casino to be operated under BIL's new subsidiary, BIL Gaming.

    Noble application rejected
    The Noble Organisation's application to convert the Palace nightclub in Blackpool has been rejected on the grounds that it would 'open the floodgates for other small casino bids'. Councillor Mary Smith said that Blackpool's development control committee needed to concentrate on the bigger picture.

    Airports chaos could cost tourism £140 million
    The recent airport disruptions could cost the British tourism industry one per cent of the total revenue generated by overseas visitors, according to an economist at Grant Thornton cited in the Telegraph newspaper. Maurice Fitzpatrick said that the £140 million figure seemed like a reasonable number, but could 'well be higher' if negative comments in the overseas media continued.
