New Laws Will Allow Online Casinos to Advertise on UK TV

Casinos, betting shops and other forms of gambling will soon be able to advertise on television in the UK.
Rules banning such commercials will be scrapped in September next year when the Gambling Act comes fully into force.
The plans would however place restrictions on targeting young people and the vulnerable in the advertising and there would also be a ban under the new rules on claims that gambling can solve financial problems.
Under the new draft rules, gambling adverts will be banned from showing behaviour which is 'socially irresponsible' or could lead to financial, social or emotional harm. They must also not be targeted at children or other vulnerable people. Like alcohol adverts, they must not link gambling to seduction, sexual success or 'enhanced attractiveness'.
A consultation by the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) and the Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice (BCAP) will be launched to advise on the finalised regulations that will take effect in 2007 when the Gambling Act comes into force.
Gambling Commission chairman Peter Dean said, 'It will be crucial to ensure that advertisements are consistent with the provisions in the legislation, and in particular with the objective of protecting children and other vulnerable people from harm.'
